The most common reasons are:
1) The version of Pear Note for Mac is too old. You need at least 2.1. Make sure you're up to date.
2) The sync didn't complete. This can be because Pear Note for iPad didn't finish syncing or because your Mac is still downloading the documents. Check the Dropbox icon in your Mac's menubar to see if your Mac is still syncing. If there's a green checkmark, it's done. If there's a blue circular arrow rotating, it's still syncing. If those aren't it, please send an email to support@usefulfruit.com and I'll try to help you track down the problem.
Thanks,

Further on this issue:
I have Pear Note for Mac 2.1 and the latest version on the iPad. I'm using Lion. I just downloaded Dropbox today. So everything is current.
The DropBox folder indicates that the files are synced. When I try to open the files from Pear Note for Mac, I get a "This file cannot be opened" message.
However, if I double-click on the file in the Dropbox folder, Pear Note opens the file.
When I close the file, Pear Note will then open the file from the Open Menu.
Hmmmm.

Ah, you're running Pear Note on Lion. There's a bug that causes the File->Open menu to not work on Lion. It's fixed in the current beta, and will be fixed in 2.1.1. You can try the beta if you like, or just open files from Finder or using search.
Note that this actually has nothing to do with Pear Note for iPad. You'll notice the same behavior with documents created in Pear Note for Mac.

How do we get the beta that fixes the Lion issue?

If you're running Pear Note from usefulfruit.com, it's pretty easy. To get the latest beta:
Launch Pear Note, go to Preferences, and select the following options:
- Check for updates automatically
- Include beta releases
Then select "Check For Updates" from the Pear Note menu to install the latest beta. After doing this, you'll get automatic updates to the latest beta. If you don't want to continue updating to beta releases, just go back and uncheck "Include beta releases" after you're done testing.
If you got Pear Note from the Mac App Store, it's a bit more difficult as Apple does not allow us to include any alternate distribution method within our apps. You can email me and I can get you a beta copy that way, though you'll have to just watch for a new version as it will not auto-update.

Thanks. I bought Pear Note through the Mac App Store. I think I'll just wait for version 2.1.1. Do you know when that one will be out?

I can't say for sure, but hopefully in the next couple weeks.
