The Toronto Maple Leafs are hoping to get better by trading good players.A day after after retaining coach Randy Carlyle, they should not have, the team has had trade discu sions on Nazem Kadri, Jake Gardiner, Dave Bolland and Nikolai Kulemin, and they're "eager" to continue. That, despite this: "Centers and defensemen are the hardest players to acquire," general manager Dave Nonis said on Thursday after announcing Carlyle's extension. We don't want to throw out young pieces that are growing and will Bud Dupree Jersey make mistakes."That'd make moving Kadri and Gardiner pretty ironic, yeah? Maybe they could move Kadri for a good young center, and Gardiner for a puck-moving defenseman. Here's a look at just what the Leafs are shopping:Kadri: Did he improve on his nearly point-per-game showing during the 2013 season? No but that shouldn't have been expected, anyway. Kadri, at 23 years old and in his first full NHL season, still put up 20 goals and 30 a sists with a rotating cast of linemates led by Joffrey Lupul. Toronto was an abysmal puck-po se sion team, but Kadri was le s a culprit for that than any other forward, controlling a team-best .That's not to say he's a sure thing or a finished product; he started more of his Tyson Alualu Jersey shifts in the offensive zone than any other Leaf, his defense certainly needs work and he's going to look for a raise after one more season with a $2.9 million salary cap, but it's tough to imagine him slotting worse than a point-producing second-line center on a good team. Again, 50 points and something approaching a decent po se sion game on that particular team? Not bad.Moving Kadri would, if nothing else, potentially open high-profile minutes for Peter Holland, who played well in that role last season when given the opportunity. If Toronto is out to improve their blue line, this is as close to a trade chip as they have but trades aren't easy, and what exactly the Leafs think would improve their blue line has to be questioned.Gardiner: Also 23, Gardiner's an all-world skater, which leads him to take risks that Carlyle wasn't comfortable with, though his playing time increased down the stretch. Like Kadri, he was the Leafs' best po se sion player at his position (46.4 shot attempts) Marcus Gilbert Jersey and led the team in goals by a defenseman with 10.He's also entering the last year of his entry-level deal, which puts him on track to reach restricted free agency after next season. That's another reason to wonder why, exactly, the Leafs seem so gung-ho to deal him. He's a young, cheap, high-upside player with a skill puck control that the Leafs' roster lacks nearly William Gay Jersey top to bottom. There's no reason to trade him, other than some misguided belief that his skillset is too similar to Morgan Rielly's.Kulemin:He's set to become an unrestricted free agent and hasn't seemed likely to return to the Leafs in quite some time, and would return only a draft pick in exchange for negotiating rights. Depending on what he's looking for, though, he'd be a valuable player on a contending team.Even if he never comes close to scoring 30 goals again, he's shown himself capable of playing well in a defensive role. Also worth noting: A couple years ago, he, Clarke MacArthur and Mikhail Grabovski were Toronto's most productive line. That cratered when Carlyle took over and used them in an almost exclusive non-offensive capacity After 2013, Grabovski was bought out and MacArthur was not re-signed. Those two are coming off productive years in Washington and Ottawa. It's not hard to see something similar happening with Kulemin.Bolland:Trading Bolland, at this point, . He played 15 games for the Leafs, then had his season ruined by an Achille' tendon injury. That, according to Carlyle and Nonis, was where things spiraled out of control despite the fact that Bolland was doing a decent job on the third line the season before. The end result: Bolland was reportedly looking for 6-8 years and $30-40 million. It's impo sible to blame Bolland for trying. It's also too much to pay for a third-liner coming off Jack Lambert Jersey a serious injury. If Toronto trades his negotiation rights, it'd show that they realize it.
