I'm surprised to not see a post on this yet, so I guess I'll ask the obligatory question. The iPad seems like a dream match for Pear Note. What are your plans for bringing PN to iPad?

It would be usefull to be able to change the speed of the playback. Sometimes we have to rely a bit more on the audio than the text. But it's a bit anoying to listen to a slow speaker when you're looking for information... I've actually got into this habit from when I worked to digitize academic books for blind people. They usually "read" the books quite fast! It's surprising at first, but with a bit of practice it grows on us...

Hi, I use your application every day and I couldn't live without it. Besides Safari, it is the most used application I have. I really appreciate the continued support and development of the program as well. I was wondering, are there any plans to release an iPad version? As a student, it would be great to be able to take the iPad to class, use your application, and then import said Pear Note files into the desktop version. I would be a first day purchaser. Just a thought!

Hello,

Thanks again for such an amazing application, but just wanted to request some feature that I thought would be good. I love the "Jump back" button because it allows me to replay something quickly when I miss something. However, during the boring parts of lecture, I wish there was a "Jump Forward" button. The fast forward button doesn't work so well for me-- it is to slow and I rather just drag the time line instead of using the fast forward button (but Jump Forward would be awesome!).

Also, after I import a video and watch it again, I sometimes accidently hit the record button with the "record video" boxed checked which activates my camera recording myself. I wish I could undo this somehow (I don't think the "undo" feature works for this). I usually just have to quit my current pearnote without saving it and reopen it.

Also, a feature to delete the imported video (like the "Remove Slides" feature) would be cool too.

Thanks again!

Is there a way to erase the meta data for the time line in changing for the next slide? I realized that my slides are not in sync with the video and want to start over in terms of changing the next slide myself. I tried to delete the slides then importing them again, however, the meta data for the slides are still there. I don't want pearnote to automatically change to the next slide for me in playback mode-- rather i want to start over and do it myself.

In the help document, it says that that you can add images and tables to the notes section of pear note:

"In addition, Pear Note includes some less common features including:

	• Highlighting
• Quick Lists
• Images"

Also, in the home page (http://www.usefulfruit.com/pearnote/) the last thumbnail, there is an example of the image of a caffeine molecule.

How do you add images and tables into the note section of pearnote? I tried dragging a Tiff image and JPEG into the notes section, but nothing comes up.

Hello,

I'm in my test period for that great piece of software and I'm having a problem : in some of the courses I'm following, teachers give their slides to students only after the course is finished, but I would be pleased to let Pear Note record slide changes even if there isn't any slides at the moment. Then, when the slides are made available, I could integrate them into the corresponding Pear Note document.
At the moment I am testing a way to do such a thing involving a dummy slides I will change in the future. So I hope when the slides will be released Pear Note would be able to keep the recorded slide changes.
But this is a tricky way, so what about including this in your software ?

Thanks !

I always take my class notes with pear note, but for blogging/journaling I've been using programs that have full screen capabilities (MacJournal, WriteRoom, OmmWriter -- which is absolutely beautiful for a beta, but needs more capabilities)

Anyways, I think this may be a useful tool for taking notes in a classroom environment, with just the text to keep the student company rather than all the windows, backgrounds, etc.

Thanks for reading!

Hi, not a user yet, but seriously considering Pear Notes. My question - can I have a pre-typed agenda already in the text/note portion of Pear Notes - i.e. before I go to my meeting and begin recording and taking notes?

I'm secretary of an organization and usually I have the agenda up on the screen in Word or whatever - and then type notes in between outlined agenda items.

So I'd like to have my agenda in the notes screen of Pear Notes, go to my meeting, start audio recording, and still have the ability to "jump" around the pre-typed agenda, make notes, and have those "live" notes audio time stamped.

Clear as mud?? :) Thanks in advance for help!

I've been collecting a wish list of features while trying out this software. Sorry to post this as a list, but I don't have time to put them in individually. Thanks for the great piece of software! I wish I had this years ago and will be buying very soon.

Auto-save at intervals set in preferences.
Set default font preferences (spacing, font size, font face, etc.).
Pages-like formatting toolbar.
Drag-and-drop editing.
Show total time in toolbar.
Show total slides in footer (before previous and next buttons).
Thumbnail view of slides (for easier navigation while recording).
Undo capability while recording slide progressions with audio (for those times when I or my instructor accidently hit the wrong previous/next button).
Active linking to slides, so that changes in original slides is reflected on the fly in Pear Note.
Pages-, OmniOutliner-like editing features (or become an add-on to Pages and Keynote), especially styles for lists, paragraphs and characters.
Annotations to slides (pie-in-the-sky).

Hi Chad,
New customer, so I thought I would provide some initial feedback.
1. I'd like to see a preference option to disable active letter highlighting, it's neat but ultimately a little distracting.
2. I like the style of the active letter highlighting and would like to have that style available for the word highlighting as opposed to just he blue underline, which is a little too subtle too stand out on its own.
3. It would be helpful to have an indication of the current size of the note package as you are recording too it. I'm concerned that these are going to grow very large if the user doesn't have some way of gauging the size in real time.

I'm running 1.3.1 on snow leopard and so far no problems.
Looking forward to experimenting on applying pear note to my workflow and seeing how it fits in.
I think you have a winning idea here.
I was contemplating purchasing a livescribe pen, but was being held back by the fact that I'm really basically paperless now and prefer electronic notes to notebooks.

Looking forward to how the product evolves and plan to provide useful feedback as I identify it.

There's been a lot of talk about what webcam is good to use with Pear Note. Unfortunately, most webcams available today have very poor quality video when compared with the iSight that comes built into all of our Macbooks. That said, this is not the case with all webcams.

I just acquired a Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro, and the video quality is actually very good. To my eye, it's better than the built-in iSight. The microphone built into it is not bad either, though it's somewhat muddy. I've also found the Mac driver that comes with OS X to be a little buggy, but as long as the video gets started it seems to work fine. Hopefully Apple will improve the driver soon.

That said, it's still the best option I've found. So, if you're looking for an external webcam to use with Pear Note, I'd recommend it.

Imported a huge video, 1.6 GB, to take notes on it (Love that ability!) and discovered a couple usability features.
1. Saving the note takes a long time - 2.5 minutes.
2. It would be nice if the first frame of the video would appear when the note was opened instead of just when play is pressed. At first I thought the video was unavailable because it didn't show up.
3. The movie has chapter markers but there's no way to access them.
4. Although the video is resizable there's no way to know when the size is 100%, 200% etc. QuickTime like controls for size and chapter markers would be great.
5. If the video is stopped when I type, the typed text can't be used for navigation. I would think that the text would just navigate to the stopped time.

Thanks for a great program.

Hi,

First great product! Many uses for many people. This could really take off for Useful Fruit. We would to use it to record all of our internal meetings, Board meetings and some training. But we must resolve a microphone issue...

I have the purchased the $150 MXL AC-404 USB conference microphone http://www.mxlmics.com/products/web_conferencing/AC-404/AC-404.html

This is a high quality mic made by Marshall, the amp and microphone compnay that all the best musicians use. This is not a cheaply made conference mic.

It is a microphone that requires no drivers and apparently uses the USB CODEC.

Here are the details:

- PN works fine with the Internal microphone.
- the USB CODEC shows in up in PearNote (PN) audio preferences
- PN recognizes the AC-404 in audio preview (green bars move when there is sound)
- the only time PN records with the AC-404 is: 1) on restart 2) the first time PN is opened and 3) on the first record only. I cannot add to the recording.
- In all other instances than above, PN appears to record but on playback it starts briefly and then stops.

If there is anything you want me to test from my end let me know.

My system specs:

Macbook Pro
PowerPC G4 1.5Ghz
512MB RAM
OSX Leopard 10.5.6

Thanks!

First I thought that on the new version this was replaced by the underlying. I personnally think that the underlying is enough. The yellow highlighting is a very cool and nice effect, but after a while it's a bit much for my taste.

Hello:

I stumbled across Pear Note while reading Macworld's RSS feed. The idea is great, especially for taking notes during a lecture. However, there are a couple of shortcomings that make be balk at purchasing the software.

1. Lack of robust outlining support (I know this is on the horizon, though, so I won't belabor the point!).

2. Keyboard clicking is way too loud on the recording

I wonder whether there's any way to get rid of and/or substantially reduce this being picked up in the recording? I'm not a keyboard banger by any stretch of the imagination, but if I were I think it'd make the recordings unbearable to listen to! I could see this easily being circumvented by an external mic source, but that completely removes the convenience and ability to use the software (for me); one can't walk into class and pull out a laptop and mic equipment to set up on the desk!

I have no clue how this might be fixed, but I certainly hope there's a way... I'd really love to fully deploy it in my note taking, and would if the typing noise was substantially reduced.

I have a MacPro on which I just installed a newly licensed copy of Pear Note (thanks MUPromo!). I use both the original iSight and an external Sony DV video cam plugged directly into the MacPro via Firewire. Here is what I found:

1. Pear Note will record the video from the iSight but if the Audio is checked (with iSight selected in the Prefs for Audio) it will return an error when you click the record button. If a different Audio source is selected, it will record the video from the iSight just fine.

2. Pear Note doesn't recognize the Sony DV via Firewire cam at all?!? Doesn't matter if the iSight is plugged in or not. I know the DV cam works because I use it in other applications (CamTwist, Final Cut Pro, etc.)

3. When you're done recording, it won't play unless you manually advance the player beyond the first frame.

4. I installed a demo copy on my MacBook Air and everything works fine with the built-in iSight for video and the built-in mic.

So, I assume all development took place on Macs with built in cams and mics?

The reason I purchased Pear Note is so that I can use my MacBook Pro, with a DV cam plugged in with external mic and use it to point the camera at the speaker, who is wearing a mic, and record meetings and conferences. This won't work if Pear Note only works with the built-in cam and internal mic. If it only uses the internal cam and I have to be typing at the same time, then I'm on the video, not the speaker.

Are there plans to support DV cams via Firewire? Or because Apple seems to be moving away from Firewire is that not in the works for Pear Note?

I'm kinda bummed. I had really great hopes for this in that I could record a speaker at a conference but if I can only record myself typing via the built in cam...I'm not quite sure what the point of having video recording capabilities is for??

celsee on "Highlight Text Line?"

Another thing I think would be fantastic is if the entire text line was highlighted according to the point in the audio, as opposed to a character-by-character highlighting method. I believe this was also mentioned in the Macworld feed I read. As the audio point reaches the last character on a given line, it could skip to and highlight the entire next line of text.

Hi. Thanks for a WONDERFUL piece of software. I've been looking for something like this for a long time. Don't know why it took somebody so long to get around to it. Thank you!

A feature request:

Could edits while on pause be tied into the current paused spot on the recording (that way you could pause, think, and add notes and still be able to use your added written notes to navigate the recording), OR...

Could edits while on stopped be tied into the timing of the surrounding keystrokes (that way if a keystroke was originally at 10 seconds and your added a note after that keystroke, the timing of that added note could be declared as 10.01 seconds for example).

The ability to navigate the recording using ALL the user's notes (whether entered during playback, paused, or stopped) is preserved.
