Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, this is not likely to happen. There are two reasons:

1) Pear Note is designed to let you take notes on live recordings (from the microphone or an attached webcam). You can take notes on prerecorded media files, but this is done by just pretending that it is live. Combining live and recorded simultaneously is very challenging to create an intuitive UI. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's challenging.

2) Youtube's terms of use prohibit this. They only allow you to view things on their site or in their embedded viewer on a web page. You are not allowed to download videos or display them elsewhere. I realize there are lots of ways to get around this technically, but they are not allowed by Youtube's terms of use.

So, I'm sorry but this is likely not going to happen. If you want to take notes on Youtube videos, you can do so by using one of the tools out there to download the video. Then import it into a Pear Note document, hit play, unlock the text and take notes on it. It won't help you with recording live as well, but you can at least take notes on a video.

My teachers always play Youtube videos during the classes. It's awkward that I can only record the sound when I am watching the videos... Why not add this function? At least allow me to link it on my timeline and play it with my notes like sound does. It will be even more excellent if you have a special pause recording bottom for both sound recording and linked video so that I could pause the sound recording, link the video and continue recording whenever my teacher has an explanation to the video or continue the class. : ) I truly love this app!

Hi Mike,

I'm sorry, but I don't know of a card that will work with Pear Note. Pear Note uses the standard Quicktime interfaces for video input. For a video device to work with Pear Note (or other apps like iChat, Skype, etc.), the device must provide some software to hook it into Quicktime (in Quicktime parlance, this is called a Sequence Grabber Component). Neither of the cards you mentioned have this, which is why you have to use the software provided by the manufacturer to operate the card. If you could find a card that had such a component, then it should work with Pear Note, though I've never tried it. A card that did this would likely claim to work with lots of software (e.g. iChat and Skype).

I hope that helps. Let me know if you find anything.

Thanks,
Chad

Hello - Does anyone know of a compatible Video capture card that works with PearNote? I tried the following devices with no luck:

I may not be properly naming what I want to do with Pear Note when I say Screen Video, so let me describe it. As a Financial Planner, I do lots of interactive "what if" scenarios with my clients. I would like Pear Note to record the activity going on my MacBook screen while we discuss each scenario. Since this is Interactive, I want to capture both the audio and on screen activity simultaneously. I would prefer that the video record what is happening on screen rather that what me and my clients are doing. Is it possible to record the screen?

Absent recording the Screen, I can do a quick print to PDF and add multiple single PDfs to the active recording This would not be ideal, but might suffice. It would be an undesired interruption.

It would be my intention to use these files Primarily for my own documentation, however sharing them securely and privately with the individual clients sounds like a pretty cool option.

Certainly in a lecture situation, adding notes alongside a prepared PDF makes PN a terrific app when I attend conferences.

Does the Notes section of PN integrate with LiveScribe's Echo smart pen? That would really leverage both my client meetings and conference note taking.

Thank you.

Just wanted to append a bit on here. I hope to release 1.2 fairly soon, which should fix this problem for all affected users. 1.2 is currently in beta and beta testers who had this problem with 1.1.3 are not experiencing it any more.

FYI to all users. While the vast majority of users have no problems when recording video, a couple of users have experienced crashes when recording video. This seems to occur anywhere from 8 minutes to several hours. This appears to be due to a bug in QuickTime (which Pear Note uses for recording). The good news is that I believe I can change the way I use QuickTime to solve this problem. The bad news is that it will require some major modifications and will likely take several weeks.

If you're an affected user, I'd very much like to hear from you so I can make sure my fix really works. I just have to warn you that the fix will take a little time. In the mean time, recording audio should continue to work just fine.

For most of you, you can ignore this message entirely as you're not affected.

Thanks very much for using Pear Note and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused anyone,

I'm not sure I entirely understand the problem. Are you saying that part of the first recording gets cut off by the new recording, or that the second recording is not the length it should be? Do you have a saved sample document you could zip up and send to bugs@usefulfruit.com so I can see this better?

I have tried recording a note with audio and video, and pearnote does great on the first and second paragraphs. For some reason, if I go back and try to add other paragraphs with audio/video and typing text, part of my note gets cut off on playback. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for the compliments and the great comments. I'll address them in order:

1. I'll hopefully be able to do this soon. Pear Note (like most audio/video apps) actually uses QuickTime under the hood for recording and playback. The betas of Pear Note actually had 640x480 as an option, but I discovered a bug in QuickTime that caused the app to crash after 10 minutes or so when recording at this resolution. I've been working with the QuickTime team to get it fixed, but I don't want to enable it until they've issued a fix.

2. You can actually do this now. If you hover over the video/slides section you should get a tooltip telling you how to do it. All you have to do is double-click the video/slides and they'll pop out into a window of their own.

3. There actually are slides shortcuts, which you can see in the tooltip if you hover over the Prev/Next buttons. They are Cmd-Opt-Up and Cmd-Opt-Down, respectively.

4. I've been thinking about this a lot. This is actually one of the main reasons the Back button exists. I like your interface idea of making a configurable amount of time in the past to start playing at. I'll play with it and see what I can do.

Thanks,

Thank you for this very innovative app. It has finally allowed me to reliably take notes in any setting. I have a couple of requests.

1. Could you bump max video resolution to 640*480? I know file sizes would grow very large, but the choice would be nice, considering the capabilities of the isight.

2. Could you allow for the video section and the slides section to be detached from the main window? This would allow the user to take advantage of a multimonitor setup in playback mode.

3. Could you implement a keyboard shortcut to advance slides during recording mode?

4. This one may be a bit of a stretch: Most people do not type notes that refer to something that is being said at that same exact time. Instead, the notes being written at any particular point in time probably refer to comments that were made previously, perhaps 1, 2, 5, 10, 30, etc seconds ago. It would be nice if the user could account for their personal gap by being able to set a preference that recorded current key strokes as key strokes from x seconds ago.

Again, thank you for writing this wonderful piece of software.

mlaurenc - thanks for the excellent suggestions. I'll definitely take them into consideration for future versions.

As far as audio goes right now, there are other products out there than allow you to route audio through fake outputs and inputs, such as Soundflower ( http://www.cycling74.com/products/soundflower ) and Audio Hijack Pro ( http://rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/ ). You can use these to make audio from apps on your Mac show up like another audio input on the system. I'm not sure if there's anything similar for video.

I don't believe the Ecamm Huckleberry works with the iMac, though you could potentially fashion your own version for the iMac.

I don't really understand your last question though. The audio device can be set to any system audio input, but none of those will be voices from an online videoconference. They'll be part of the default audio output, but not input.

Thanks,

this would be very useful for online interviewing/meetings/discussions where note taking is used. I do these often in Skype, iChat or some other video/audio meeting technology (e.g. Flashmeeting). I would really see some advantage to this tool (Pear Note) if the video source could be the meeting (or as in Shinywhitebox's Chatter, a section of the desktop where the meeting is being held). Regarding the Ecamm Huckleberry as a solution, does it also attach to iMac Core2Duo?

Also, couldn't the audio device setting permit default system input so that all voices in an online vc or audio meeting would be recorded?

Thanks for considering these ideas.

Cheers,
