Hi amyming,

No, no changes in picking up keyboard sounds have been made, and none are planned at this time. Most users have not found the keyboard noise to be too problematic, and those that do generally solve the problem with external USB microphones.

Hey!
I was just wanna make the same suggestion that I found the keyboard sound way too loud when I tried to listen to the recording. I think this is a big drawback of pear note and I may just change to using paper & pen as it is very hard to listen to the recordings again :( . Not sure if any improvements have been made on this aspect?

Wow, the clicking on text buttons bringing back full buttons is certainly a bug. Thanks for pointing it out (I guess not many people use text only toolbar buttons).

Those points definitely satisfies my request. Although, as one clicks the Record (text) button, the image buttons are switched back.

A minor request for future versions would be a menu option to toggle the display of the transport bar (the turquose bar showing time and speed controls).

As you said, you should make sure everyone is ok with you recording them. That said...

Pear Note today is pretty customizable that you should be able to be discrete. You can:

1) Under preferences, uncheck Auto-expand audio section and Auto-expand video section (preventing those sections from being expanded when you create a new note
2) Hide the entire sidebar by double-clicking the divider
3) Hide the record button by making the toolbar display text only
4) Hide the entire toolbar by pressing the lozenge in the top right corner.

I hope that helps.

Hi, I have one feature request.

I wish it was possible to make the Recording / Playback UI elements more discrete (preferably non-visible) for those of us who feel that it's a bit unsettling during meetings, to show loud and clear that you are RECORDING... if you catch my drift. :)

Of couse (!), I know that one should always ask the participants whether recording the meeting would be OK.

BUT, in practice – this is a delicate question to ask – when, honestly, the only thing you want is to quickly record a conversation for your own memory (a productive cause). I sometimes feel I don't want to ask this question. But I certainly don't want to be caught in action while recording (without having asked for permission), coming out as someone who uses fishy practices.

1) My current plan for 1.3 is to try to address this. I understand getting tired of having to open menus to apply formatting all the time, so I'm looking to streamline the common tasks (like list/unlist).

2) I'm glad to hear you've found something that works for you. Sounds like a great setup.

Thanks,

Hi,

1. I give my vote for better outlining, but also in text editing capabilities as well. And if at all possible, styling :) (or at least being able to set "default" values for font, size, bullets, and a 1-click "list-unlist" toolbar button!) I'm just not a fan of CMD-T...

2. At least for me, on a 1yo macbook, using the built-in microphone is a no-no. Clicking sound gets way too disturbing for me. Might be less of a problem if you record a one-on-one conversation, but if you're in a big classroom, it's no good. The mic probably picks up a lot on the high frequencies, but also, it's pointing at you... (another thing I noticed is that if I use the built-in mic and my screen is anywhere but at the hightest brightness, there's an added constant buzz...). I've been recording while typing in class (without PN, which I'm thinking about...) using an external mic. You can get something that fits in your pocket. Myself I bought a usb adapter (Griffin Imic), which is kind of a mini external soundcard. Then you don't need a bulky usb microphone - you can even use something like an old walkman mini mic. And let me tell you, this makes a huge difference!

Personnally I think it would take a huge amount of time to develop some "key-click filtering" capabilities and it would probably still leave (or produce!) undesirerable noises. I've done some noise cleanup jobs in recordings and it can be a nightmare...

Most users have not found the keyboard noise to be too problematic. In fact, I've even had users compliment me on the key sound effect that I'd added as an audio indicator of the typed text (which, of course, is just the sound of them typing on the recording).

That said, I understand that some laptops pick up the keyboard sounds worse than others, and some users would prefer to get rid of the sound altogether. As you might imagine, it's not easy to do this. I plan to do some research into audio processing to see what I can do, but it won't be in a release very soon. Improved outlining, on the other hand, will hopefully be in 1.3.

Thanks for the feedback.

Hello:

I stumbled across Pear Note while reading Macworld's RSS feed. The idea is great, especially for taking notes during a lecture. However, there are a couple of shortcomings that make be balk at purchasing the software.

1. Lack of robust outlining support (I know this is on the horizon, though, so I won't belabor the point!).

2. Keyboard clicking is way too loud on the recording

I wonder whether there's any way to get rid of and/or substantially reduce this being picked up in the recording? I'm not a keyboard banger by any stretch of the imagination, but if I were I think it'd make the recordings unbearable to listen to! I could see this easily being circumvented by an external mic source, but that completely removes the convenience and ability to use the software (for me); one can't walk into class and pull out a laptop and mic equipment to set up on the desk!

I have no clue how this might be fixed, but I certainly hope there's a way... I'd really love to fully deploy it in my note taking, and would if the typing noise was substantially reduced.

I'm not sure I entirely understand the problem. Are you saying that part of the first recording gets cut off by the new recording, or that the second recording is not the length it should be? Do you have a saved sample document you could zip up and send to bugs@usefulfruit.com so I can see this better?

I have tried recording a note with audio and video, and pearnote does great on the first and second paragraphs. For some reason, if I go back and try to add other paragraphs with audio/video and typing text, part of my note gets cut off on playback. What am I doing wrong?

mlaurenc - thanks for the excellent suggestions. I'll definitely take them into consideration for future versions.

As far as audio goes right now, there are other products out there than allow you to route audio through fake outputs and inputs, such as Soundflower ( http://www.cycling74.com/products/soundflower ) and Audio Hijack Pro ( http://rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/ ). You can use these to make audio from apps on your Mac show up like another audio input on the system. I'm not sure if there's anything similar for video.

I don't believe the Ecamm Huckleberry works with the iMac, though you could potentially fashion your own version for the iMac.

I don't really understand your last question though. The audio device can be set to any system audio input, but none of those will be voices from an online videoconference. They'll be part of the default audio output, but not input.

Thanks,

this would be very useful for online interviewing/meetings/discussions where note taking is used. I do these often in Skype, iChat or some other video/audio meeting technology (e.g. Flashmeeting). I would really see some advantage to this tool (Pear Note) if the video source could be the meeting (or as in Shinywhitebox's Chatter, a section of the desktop where the meeting is being held). Regarding the Ecamm Huckleberry as a solution, does it also attach to iMac Core2Duo?

Also, couldn't the audio device setting permit default system input so that all voices in an online vc or audio meeting would be recorded?

Thanks for considering these ideas.

Cheers,
