actually no, I'm in my last year of high-school and going into Biomedical Sciences next year (it's the equivalent of pre-med for people in Canada). However with that said, graphic design is a hobby (and helping to pay for university with a bunch of contest design winnings). Here's a recent t-shirt I design that was published in local paper and was supported by the Kitchener Rangers, a team in the Ontario Hockey League (basically the league under the NHL) http://www.therecord.com/opinion/columns/article/673537--join-the-pink-movement-and-stand-up-to-bullying

The design isn't very clear in the article's picture so here's the actual design submission I sent in. (ignore the watermark)
http://tinypic.com/r/2eobi3b/6

You can be the judge if I'm good or not.

Thanks very much for the feedback and for the compliments. I'll keep these in mind as I plan out future improvements.

And thanks for the graphic design offer. I'm in good shape now, but I'll keep this in mind should the need arise. Are you a graphic design student?

Hey useful fruit software I'd like to start by stating that I love your software! I have both the mac and iPad versions of the app and I love them! However, there are a few draw backs that I would like to comment on in hopes of making the software even better. Please do not worry, these are minor points and a little more of annoyances than anything.

First of all, I love how in the iPad app the bold, italics, underline etc. are all visible on the main keyboard and right there. However, once you go on the Mac side of things they don't even appear to be part of the software. Of course command + B bolds and using keyboard shortcuts is preferred as it doesn't take away from typing but finding some of the other functions such as changing the font size were a little more convoluted to find. As a result, I suggest that like in the iPad app where all the main functions are at your fingertips, that you add all the formatting options along beside the highlighting and list box. This will make them easier to find and if you hover over them, they could possibly tell you the keyboard shortcut. Also it would be cool to arrange (or remove) the icons in a order that makes sense to the customer especially if there will be the bold, italics, change font size boxes all to the main bar. A good example of an app that does this well is pages by apple. Their implantation of showing the options that the customer wants/needs is perfect and I suggest something similar could be done.

Secondly involves the web-player. While these are minor annoyances, why is the title (at the center in the gradient area) so small? Would it be possible to make it a bigger font to have it appear as it is a title? *the author size is perfect).

Also, if you ever need some basic graphic design creation, for the bold, italics, etc. icons or whatever else, do not hesitate to ask. I'll gladly do them free of charge. I have my exams till the 18th but after I'm free :)

Again thanks for the awesome software. Every student I know that has a mac is told about this software.

It's a bug, though I'm not sure it's one I can fix without Apple fixing things on their side first. Most apps on iOS use the standard, Apple-provided plain text editor. Pear Note has a custom text editor, which is why it can do true rich text. The interplay between the keyboard, autocorrect, and a custom text editor is complicated and not as mature as I'd like. This means that autocorrect sometimes gets confused.

I'll see what I can do, but I'm afraid I won't be able to fix it. I'd need either Apple to fix autocorrect or have Apple give me more control over autocorrect.

Sorry if this got a bit too technical. Hopefully a future update to iOS will improve this.

How does this work on the iPad? I've noticed some odd behavior, it seems like if you type a word (made a space after the word) and then attempt to delete backwards and correct it, the autocorrect treats it like a new word. Although I can't think of a real world example right now, this is easy enough to demonstrate. Type word such as "apostrophe" into Pear Note for the iPad. Then follow it with a space or period. Finally, go backspace and delete any part of word apostrophe, then type "teh". Autocorrect will attempt to change it to "the". Is this a bug or intended behavior?

Thanks for your speedy reply! I'm very glad that you were able to share your thoughts on these matters, and definitely look forward to potentially seeing them. I did just want to note that currently I feel that Tables on the Mac may be an under-utilized feature because of its placement (and the fact that it's not directly available from the toolbar). I feel that your table support is excellent, and certainly and standout feature as I don't know of any other applications that sync audio to notes and include tables.

In fact, the feature of tables has no mention on the Mac App store description or your website! I had to find the feature myself before I ever started using it. I definitely think including it as a toolbar button and adding it to the description of Pear Note would greatly increase use on the Mac and interest in tables in iOS.

Hi Leviar,

I try not to commit to future changes ahead of time. That said, I also want to be open about my thoughts. So, I'll try my best to answer your questions, but please understand that I'm not certain of this right now. These are just my thoughts.

Table support on iOS - I haven't heard much interest in this feature, so it hasn't moved up on the priority list much yet. I'll take this as a vote for the feature.

Video support on iOS - I've had a lot of interest in this, much more than I had originally expected. It's something I'm hoping to add after adding iPhone support.

Bullet multi-line support - I think you should update :) Pear Note 1.0.4 for iPad also came out today and includes this.

More syncing support - Right now, I'm taking a wait and see approach to this. I had planned to add iCloud support quickly, but iCloud support for document storage (particularly large documents like those in Pear Note) has been full of problems so far. So, I've taken a step back to watch what happens on the cloud front. As a small dev shop, I don't have the time to support lots of services. I understand the excitement around other services, but I can't justify the time it takes to support them at this time.

Drawing support on Mac and iOS - Nothing's changed here. It's still something I'm hoping to add after adding iPhone support. I'm not sure if it'll come to iOS and Mac at the same time, or to iOS first (where it's a more natural fit) and then possibly Mac later.

I hope that helps.
Chad

I absolutely love Pear Note for my MacBook Pro but obviously there're situations where it's preferable to use my iPad. I was wondering about how likely it is that certain features from the Mac version would make the jump to the iPad:

- Table support! My professor often makes tables, but unfortunately I have not been able to create these on the iPad
- Video support! I would really appreciate it if I could either record the video or take pictures and have these inside of my Pear Note. I feel like video for the iPad makes a lot of sense, since it has a forward and back camera.
- Bullet multi-line support! I love the bullet in pear note, but unfortunately I noticed that when your document extends to multiple lines, the document does not continue spacing the line from where the bullet started, and instead the line will start from the beginning of the document. This would make looking through my notes so much easier if you could implement it!
- More syncing support! There've been several new options lately, such as Microsoft sky drive and Google drive back give far more storage space than dropbox. And looking ahead, since iCloud will be far more integrated into the new Mac OS, iCloud support for syncing between the iPad and Mac apps would be fabulous as well

I also have a feature that applies to the iPad as well as the Mac app. I would really appreciate it if you could add drawings support! Drawing is often done on the chalkboard in my class, and unfortunately without the ability to record video on my iPad I have been unable to incorporate them into my notes.

I was especially curious about the drawings support, since you had previously mentioned that you were looking into this feature, but perhaps sometime after improving compatibility with Lion and creating an iPhone app. Since updating to 3.0 on the Mac, I was wondering what would be in the development pipeline for the future.

Thank you very much for making such an excellent product, and for listening to these suggestions!

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, this is not likely to happen. There are two reasons:

1) Pear Note is designed to let you take notes on live recordings (from the microphone or an attached webcam). You can take notes on prerecorded media files, but this is done by just pretending that it is live. Combining live and recorded simultaneously is very challenging to create an intuitive UI. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's challenging.

2) Youtube's terms of use prohibit this. They only allow you to view things on their site or in their embedded viewer on a web page. You are not allowed to download videos or display them elsewhere. I realize there are lots of ways to get around this technically, but they are not allowed by Youtube's terms of use.

So, I'm sorry but this is likely not going to happen. If you want to take notes on Youtube videos, you can do so by using one of the tools out there to download the video. Then import it into a Pear Note document, hit play, unlock the text and take notes on it. It won't help you with recording live as well, but you can at least take notes on a video.

RanPeg - I believe I solved your problems over email, but for anyone who might come across this post:

The App Store version should not have a check for updates option. Anything sold through the App Store must be updated through the App Store. Apple actually rejects any app that has a mechanism to update itself. So, you'll get updates through the App Store just like all your other App Store apps.

My teachers always play Youtube videos during the classes. It's awkward that I can only record the sound when I am watching the videos... Why not add this function? At least allow me to link it on my timeline and play it with my notes like sound does. It will be even more excellent if you have a special pause recording bottom for both sound recording and linked video so that I could pause the sound recording, link the video and continue recording whenever my teacher has an explanation to the video or continue the class. : ) I truly love this app!

I agree with Rob's first 3 items. Especially the bookmark feature. I am using Pear Note in medical school. We have cumulative exams and I keep all my notes in one file so everything is continuos. I do really like the look up feature - maybe even love it! Really helps with medical terminology without having to switch to browser and google!

Seems to be working well! It took a little getting used to not "saving" and just closing out. There are a couple of little things that seem different, but I can't quite put my finger on it. One thing I noticed is when appending the slides while the audio is recording the slides jump back to the 1st slide. This doesn't happen when not recording.
I like the full screen mode - NICE!

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the votes for these features. I'll add your votes to the list for #1-3.

#4 is possible today, as you found. Also, you can customize how far it jumps under Preferences->Playback with the "Jump button jumps back" setting.

#5 is also possible today with a hidden setting, though I don't post it here as I want to make sure people understand the caveats/risks about it before sharing it. Send an email to support@usefulfruit.com and I'll send it to you.

Ooops, I managed to miss the Jump Back button that's already there. Sorry.

Actually, 30 seconds is longer than my ideal (15 seconds), so maybe this could be a user setting?

Some things I've wished for while using Pear Note (they're pretty much all related to annotating existing recordings):

1. A "skip silence" button. Some recordings have lengthy quiet passages. It would be great to be able to skip over these easily. Extra credit: have an option to snip out the silence from the recorded file (double extra credit: do it non-destructively).

2. Audio leveling and filtering. Often the recorded level is all over the map and hard to understand. How about the option of an audio limiter to equalize the level, and a filter to boost voice frequencies while reducing extraneous noise and garbage? I'm an audio engineer and could help with the specification of these.

3. A bookmarking feature. I'd love to be able to mark points in the recording and easily jump to them (maybe with the option of a special keystroke). One special bookmark should be dynamically maintained at the farthest point yet reached in the recording.

4. A button to instantly rewind 15 seconds or so. Invaluable for re-listening to things you missed.

5. A way to import audio/video by reference rather than making a disk-wasting copy of it. I know there could be issues if the user moves the source file, but isn't it true that Mac OS "alias" files keep track of their parent even if it's moved?

Anybody else like these ideas?

Hi sgaer:

I replied to your email already, but I'll copy my response here as well for anyone wondering.

Pear Note for iPad and for Mac both save documents in a custom file format, the .pearnote file format. You need Pear Note for Mac to view this on your Mac. The files you're seeing are actually inside the Pear Note document.

So, you need to download Pear Note for Mac to use the files on your Mac. You can get this from here or from the Mac App Store. Once you download and install it, your Mac will recognize the .pearnote format and Finder will show it to you as a proper document.

I hope that helps.

So, how's it going everyone? It looks like a lot of people have downloaded the beta, but I've gotten very little feedback. Does that mean things are working well? Any feedback you can provide is helpful.

Thanks,

Interesting that you should ask. One of the features in Pear Note 3 for Mac (which is currently in beta; see the other thread here on it for more info) is integrating with Ecamm's Call Recorder which records Skype calls.

Beyond Skype, there are ways to get Pear Note to record system audio, but they're a bit complicated and involve 3rd party software. I talked a bit about these in a blog post a few years ago:
http://www.usefulfruit.com/blog/2008/10/recording-online-meetings-and-interviews/

I hope that helps. Let me know if you have further questions.

Definitely never suggested before. Others have suggested wall-clock related features, but you're definitely the first person I've heard say that they knew the time something was said and wanted to skip to it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Not sure if this was suggested before. But a possibly hidden time stamping so that I could go to "1:31 PM" during a recording. I often know what time something was said, and when I am reviewing, I often find myself time tagging in the notes themselves.

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure exactly what image support will look like yet. I assume that it will make it easy to snap a picture with the camera, but I can't make any promises at this time.
