I often work with a group of people and a whiteboard. It is useful to take notes with Pear Note and then take photos of the whiteboard at the end. I'd like to find a more manageable way of adding them to the notes than pasting them in the middle of my notes.

Two Requests:
* Could you make it easy to create links to photos (e.g. support a drag 'n drop to create link) so I can keep them in iPhoto?
* OR support adding several photos in lieu of a slide deck?

Hi amyming,

No, no changes in picking up keyboard sounds have been made, and none are planned at this time. Most users have not found the keyboard noise to be too problematic, and those that do generally solve the problem with external USB microphones.

I have some lengthy lectures from iTunes U. I would like to annotate them with Pear Note, but I presume importing them would create redundant copies of these big files, eating a lot of disk space.

Would it be possible to store Pear Note's information in a small "sidecar" file linked to the original lecture?

If I've misunderstood how Pear Note works, please clarify or point me to the relevant manual section.

Hey!
I was just wanna make the same suggestion that I found the keyboard sound way too loud when I tried to listen to the recording. I think this is a big drawback of pear note and I may just change to using paper & pen as it is very hard to listen to the recordings again :( . Not sure if any improvements have been made on this aspect?

Thanks for the feedback Ed. Did you mean to attach an image? This forum doesn't support image uploads (though you could upload it elsewhere and link to it here).

Note that you can edit slide changes after recording. Just play your notes and click the lock next to "Unlock to modify text". Then, watch/listen to your note and change slides. The slides changes will be recorded.

What you can't do right now is record slide changes without slides. So, if you want to record slide changes before you get ahold of the slides, you're out of luck. Dummy slides provide a work-around (as you can then change slides with the dummy slides and replace them later with the real ones), but there's no feature in Pear Note to address this.

Again, thanks for the vote. I think it's a good idea, but it's never bubbled up to the top of the TODO list due to lack of user interest. Thanks to you, user interest just doubled.

Hello,
I totally agree with joinfh2s. I have been doing the samething for the same reason. THIS IS A MUST: SLIDE POSITION SHOULD BE EDITABLE AFTER THE CONFERENCE. PLEASE, add some kind of feature in order to be able to sync slides after having saved the session.
Thank you,

Hi Chad,

Thanks for following up! I've only tried using Pear Note twice, thus far as I want to make sure that I'm able to take full advantage of the application. ... and yes, this has happened both times.

I'll zip the folder and email to you now. Fingers crossed that we can get this rectified soon. ;-)

Hmmm. Something definitely went wrong during recording. There should be a 4th file (recording-0.mov) containing the actual recording. Does this happen every time you try to record anything?

As to sending a file, the document is made up of the .pearnote folder and all the files in it. The easiest way to get it to me it probably to zip the folder up and email the zip file.

Thanks,

The audio is not switched to mute, and I've tried listening both via and sans headphones. FWIW, the indicator bar isn't showing any progress when trying to playback. ... and if I scrub the indicator to the middle (for example) and again hit the play button, it simply jumps back to the beginning of the indicator and does not play.

As for sending you the file, I admit a bit of confusion on how to do this. It appears in Dropbox as 3 (three) separate files that apparently make up the complete document. Meta, recording and uftext. Do you want a link to each file? Please advise. ... and thanks.

That should be all there is to it. Make sure your volume is turned up and your mute switch on the side of the iPad isn't switched to mute. Other than that, it sounds like you did the right thing. Are you listening via headphones or the iPad speaker?

Okay... I'm new to Pear Notes and I'm wondering what I've done wrong here. Although I hit the "record" button while taking notes on my iPad, and I was no more than 2 or 3 feet (max) from the speaker, I can't seem to play back any audio. Looking at the notes taken, it indicates that there is approximately 37 minutes of audio associated with the file; however, when I hit "play" nothing happens. What the heck am I doing wrong?

Thanks a lot for USB syncing!

Works great. USB file transfer via iTunes seems to have gotten a lot faster with later iTunes versions.
Now, what I would need to be able to edit my Pear Note files is a button to bring up the keyboard without having to tap in the text pane (which makes the video jump to somewhere).
Also would like to have a bigger video display.

The checkbox disables creating autosave files, but if it's already created it won't do anything. Pear Note (like other apps) keeps its autosave files in your home folder in Library/ . To get there, just open Finder, select Go to Folder... from the Go menu and enter ~/Library/Autosave Information/ . In there you should see one or more unsaved Pear Note documents as well as a file called com.usefulfruit.Pear Note.plist. Quit Pear Note and drag those to the Trash. When you launch Pear Note, it should not recover the old document.

Assuming that solves the problem, I'd love to get a look at the corrupt unsaved document that's causing the crash. If you wouldn't mind emailing it to bugs@usefulfruit.com, I'd very much appreciate it. Note that you'll need to zip it/compress it before emailing it.

My pearnote keeps crashing when trying to close a previous pearnote file. This keeps happening. Every time I open pearnote, it resumes previously opened pearnote files that had crashed. If I try to exit out of the previously crashed pearnote file, the whole application crashes. When I reopen a pearnote file (doesn't matter which one) it resumes the said previously crashed pearnote file. If I exit out of the ones that crashed again, it will yet again crash the program. This leads to a vicious cycle in which there is no way for me to get rid of the crash pearnote files because it automatically resumes the ones that crash. Checking the box labeled "Do not auto-recover documents after a crash" in the preferences doesn't work either-- it auto recovers them anyways.

any help? I tried sending this through the crash report-- didn't seem to go through.

You shouldn't have to remove formatting manually.

Pear Note timestamps all keystrokes when you type them. If you paste in a bunch of text, it will all get the same timestamp when you type it in. Changing formatting (e.g. bolding, etc.) will not change a character's timestamp.

So no formatting the note until it's in the app (iPad). Will PN remove formatting or do I need to do that beforehand? The lecture notes are usually pdf and formatted with bolds and different font sizes and bullets and such.

Also, while using PN this way will it time stamp every keystroke? I ask because I usually scroll along with the arrow keys and only bold things in the lecture that are emphasized and add stuff not in the notes. I'd only want the time stamp for actual entries as opposed to every keystroke.

Thanks for being so responsive!

Yes, you can certainly cut/paste into Pear Note. In Pear Note for Mac, you should be able to paste in either plain text or rich text. Pear Note for iPad will only accept plain text from other apps at this time, though you can cut/copy/paste rich text within the app itself.

Bringing the dead horse back to life - can we cut/paste text into PN or do we need to type everything up? My instructors generally have lecture notes available prior to the lecture and I want to be able to add the notes to PN without having to re-type the notes thus the need to be able to paste .rtf or plaintext. Does that work?

Makes complete sense. Thanks for the answer.

I thought it might be related to my Time Machine issues because one of the symptoms of that problem is that the time machine volume also gets in a state where it can't be unmounted. And it started around the same time I started using Pear Note. But now that I've run some more tests and you've explained the QuickTime issue, I'm starting to think it's unrelated. Both issues prevent the Time Machine volume from being ejected, but the QuickTime issue is clearly because of those temporary files and this Time Machine problem I'm experiencing is not as simple or as easily resolved.

Thanks again,

Hi David,

This is sadly a known issue that I can't do anything about. Pear Note uses QuickTime (the system framework, not the user application) under the hood to do its recording (as Mac apps generally do). QuickTime currently has a bug that causes it to put a few temporary files on USB drives when they are connected. I contacted the QuickTime team at Apple a couple years ago and they said they were working on the issue (see here if you're interested - http://osdir.com/ml/quicktime-api/2009-10/msg01659.html ). Unfortunately, I don't expect this to ever get fixed by Apple.

The bright side is that the next major version of Pear Note will move away from QuickTime for recording (at least when it's running on Lion) to something new in Lion called AVFoundation, which does not have this bug.

I don't know why this would cause Time Machine problems, though. Even if QuickTime put temporary files on the Time Machine disk, that would just prevent it from being ejected.

I've been having some problems with ejecting disks while Pear Note for Mac is running. I'm curious if Pear Note might also be causing some issues that I'm having with Time Machine.

Example:

Insert a USB Drive.

Start a new Pear Note Document.

Start recording.

Try to eject the USB drive. It fails stating "the disk 'corsair' couldn't be ejected because Pear Note is using it."

Use Activity Monitor to look at the open files. I see that there are a number of files open on in .TemporaryFiles on every volume!

/Volumes/BLACX WD2B/.TemporaryItems/folders.501/TemporaryItems/342136809.355313003063.mov
/Volumes/CORSAIR/.TemporaryItems/folders.501/TemporaryItems/342136809.359831988811.mov
/Volumes/CORSAIR/.TemporaryItems/folders.501/TemporaryItems/342136809.361756980419.mov
/private/var/folders/9_/jvnhvvmx6lsg3648gh_vqvt00000gn/T/TemporaryItems/342136809.679503023624.mov

This seems odd. Any ideas on why these files exist? Any ways to avoid it? Anyone else having Time Machine problems? I suspect that I might be having them because of the locks being held on my Time Machine disk.

I think the dropbox sync is a natural first choice - but an implementation of selective sync would be nice. A quick marker on each note to select it for syncing (if enabled in settings). As a Pearnote heavy user the uploading of a days meeting is long. I know its "in the background - sort of", but I don't need ALL my notes available on my mac via dropdox ALL the time.

Thanks. Exactly what I wanted. I had looked under the Recording menu, but not the Edit menu.

Hi David,

Pear Note for Mac actually has this feature. Just open your note in Pear Note for Mac, drag the time slider to wherever you'd like the end to be, then select Edit->Crop Recording From Here. For more information, look in Pear Note's help under Cropping Recordings.

Background: I am a Pear Notes for iPad user, and I also have a trial for Pear Note for Mac. So answers for either app would be appropriate.

Sometimes I find that I forget to turn off the recording at the end of a meeting. This is not a huge deal, especially if it's only a few minutes. I do worry about the space it wastes in DropBox and on my iPad (which is fairly space constrained). But mostly I worry because I've occasionally recorded something I don't want recorded, like a confidential 1:1 discussion.

I don't want to make Pear Note a complicated audio editor. But a simple function to cut chunks of the recording, or even just trim the end would be nice. (I've wondered if I could just open the MOV file and trim it directly, but I worry about what effect that would have on the Pear Note.)

Anyone have an existing workaround for this? Or would anyone else appreciate this as a feature?

David

Hi jfahim,

Improved external keyboard support and TextExpander support are both on my wish list of future features to add to Pear Note for iPad, but I can't promise when/if they'll make it into a release. Sorry to not be of more help, but I try to limit setting expectations until I'm sure I will meet them.

Thanks,
Chad

I use Pear Note for Mac's amazing quick indent change function (not sure exactly what to call it) by hitting return to decrease indent/bullet level and tab to increase the indent/bullet level. Is this going to be implemented on Pear Note for iPad?

Also, I use TextExpander to expand words that I use frequently in taking notes in class. I know TextExpander Touch works in other iOS apps, so I was just curious if you were planning on implementing TextExpander in Pear Note for iPad.

Thanks!

EDIT:
I guess I should clarify that I'm using the Apple Wireless Keyboard, the indent level definitely works when I tap the indent buttons on-screen.

If you set an input device in Pear Note's preferences, it will use that instead of the default for the Mac (assuming that device is present). Pear Note will ignore the default for the Mac and use whatever you set.

I just messed up the recording of a phone interview because, while I had the Mac set to use the line input, the Pear preference was set to built-in mic.

Will the Pear preference override the Mac's preference, or do you have to change both to line input, or both to built-in mic?

I'll be switching from one to the other frequently ....

I would much prefer USB above Wifi, because it is faster. What I like the most is syncing like with GoodReader with their OS X app GoodReaderUSB, which is quite fast. USB syncing through iTunes seems to be quite sluggish.
